BBC’s new “Oceans” series launched

The BBC’s new “Oceans” series was launched in the UK a couple of weeks ago and there’s a good article on it on their website with loads of information on the 8 scientific diving expeditions that made up the series which included:

  • Sea of Cortez to study Sperm whales
  • Mallorca to dive underwater cave systems looking at the evidence of past climate and sea level changes in the Mediterranean
  • Red Sea and Indian Ocean to look at coral being grown in nurseries as a way of helping damaged reefs
  • Atlantic to look at the vertical Black Hole cave system off Bahamas which may mimic what the world’s seas were likeĀ  3.5 million years ago
  • Red Sea to film fluorescence in Eritrean corals
  • Arctic – to look at the scale of the Arctic Ocean and how quickly it is changing
  • Bahamas – to show that fish hooks can be made from a metal that repels sharks and could reduce the number of sharks killed as by-catch
